How To Put Together A Cool Corporate Outfit

t’s talk about outfits for work. It’s safe to say (in most cases), gone are the days of pencil skirts and blazers. Not saying these AREN’T worn anymore in the office, but I think overall work environments have changed. Actually no, I KNOW work environments have changed. I think I definitely have an even more lax point of view since I work in the fashion industry, but overall I’m definitely seeing the girlies re-thinking their office outfits. In 2024, I think the “professional” standard has widened to incorporate trendier pieces that you can now rework outside of your 9-to-5…without getting a call from HR.

 

Outfits For Work

Ditch The Power Suit

I know, kind of blasphemous coming from someone who works for J.Crew. Let me be more specific – I think suits are cool (DUH!). For me, I lean towards cool textures…and oversized. If your company isn’t stuck in 1970, you should be able to get away with these types of “non-traditional suits”. In these photos, I’m wearing them together, but I love wearing them as separates too. You can throw on a cute tee just with your pants, or put the blazer on with jeans, skirts, etc.

I personally love the trousers and blazers from Everlane. Their tencel is such a wonderful fabric, and one that I wear all year round! They also offer this fabric in a TON of silhouettes, so you’re always going to find something that suits your personal style!

Play With Proportions

 

This kind of goes hand in hand with the above. When it comes to outfits for work, proportions are a BIG way to differentiate your every day style to your work style. I think most companies at this point just want their employees to look polished. Well, that’s all they should be asking for anyway.

When thinking about proportions, I typically play it safe. Playing it safe also works with my personal style. So if I’m wearins on top, I’m typically pairing it back to a slimmer bottom. If I’m wearing something crazy oversized/voluminous on the bottom, I’m wearing a top that’s closer to the body, or something that can be tucked in. The right proportions will always ensure your outfits for work are polished and suitable

Accessorize Your Basics

This is one of the easiest ways to think about your outfits for work. You don’t need to be the most stylish (and that’s coming from someone who WORKS in the fashion industry) at your job. Sure, you want to look NICE, but you don’t need to be the most stylish. That’s why I love having an “outfit formula” for work. I think it’s so important to have wardrobe staples. They might look different for everyone, but trust me, they’re going to help you in the long run. It’s SO easy to take your basic pieces (a white tee, a cashmere sweater, a good pair of jeans) and spice them up a little. You can accessorize your basics by adding jewelry, a hat, a scarf, or a third piece.
