How To Style A Slip Dress

Slip dresses are a big trend, and have been for quite some time. With their simple shapes that have an elegant feel to them, slip dresses are a timeless addition to your wardrobe. A slip dress can be worn year round, dressed up from day to night, and from work to weekend. Slip dresses are an easy option, so let’s talk about how to style them no matter the season or setting!

How To Style A Slip Dress

But first, how should a slip dress fit?

Although the silhouette of a slip dress is very simple, there are some things you’ll want to keep an eye out for when shopping.

  • Grazes the body – the dress should lightly graze over your curves, slightly highlighting the waistline – not too tight or too loose!
  • Look at the straps – no matter how long or short your hemline is, your straps should meet the neckline right around your armpits.
  • Slightly tapered – The most flattering designs have tapering around the bust or waistline, highlighting your curves.

How to Wear a Slip Dress

A slip dress MAY feel like a little risky for every day wear due to its flirty feel, but I’m here to tell you they really are for ANY occasion. Picking the *right* slip dress is crucial though. Here are a couple of tips when it comes to making a slip dress a versatile piece in your wardrobe.

  • Length – I’ve found that midi and maxi lengths are the most versatile. The longer length give the distinction that the dress is a piece to wear out and about (and not lingerie).
  • Print & Pattern – If you’re a little skeptical of slip dresses, opt for a pattern or print that give off the appearance of more coverage
  • Layer – My *big secret* to styling slip dresses is layering. Yes, a slip dress can make you feel a little nakey…so layers help me feel confident (and just add a nice styling element). PLUS you can use the styling hack to wear a sweater over your dress to make it look like a skirt.
  • Undergarments – If you are small chested (like me), I wear nipple covers with all of my slip dresses. And since most slip dresses show every nook and cranny, a seamless thong is a good go to optio

I love the appearances of both of the outfits you styled and were wearing above.
I also love the complementary colour contrast in the first OOTD and the fabric contrast in the second OOTD.
